- Types of toll free numbers: ex.
- “True” 800 Numbers(1-800-555-1212)
- “Vanity” 800 Numbers(1-800-YOURBIZ)
- 866, 877, or 888 Numbers(1-866-555-1212
800 Numbers
When most people think of toll free numbers, they go straight to the 8-0-0 prefix. So much so that many people interchangeably refer to toll free numbers as “800 numbers” or “1-800 numbers”. This puts a premium value on choosing an 800 number to represent your business. You can be sure that your customers easily recognize your number as toll free and that you gain greater confidence by making your business seem easy-to-reach. 800 numbers also carry a bit more weight than other toll free prefixes when it comes to presenting a professional image for your business. Since the 800 number prefix has been around considerably longer than the 888, 877, or 866 prefixes, your customers are more likely to associate you with other well-established businesses that have been using the same toll free number for decades. Vanity Numbers
Toll free vanity numbers are a great way to improve your business image and increase your return on advertising. To find the number that’s right for you, start with a word or phrase that you want your customers to associate with your business. If you sell bicycles, for example, the word “BIKE” at the end of your vanity number is a good start. Throw in a toll free prefix and a few more digits, and you have a great phone number that will stick with your customers long after they’ve seen your ads. You don’t need to spell out a word to create a memorable vanity number. In fact, many businesses get better results with vanity numbers just by using easy patterns like repeating digits (e.g. “8585”) or sequential digits (e.g. “2345”). These numbers can make just as good of an impression on your customers as words, especially if the pattern is emphasized in a catchy jingle or called out with large fonts on billboards or magazine ads. All toll free vanity numbers are reserved from a single national database of spare numbers known as SMS/800. TollFreeRental.com® offers our free vanity number search tool as a way to instantly find and reserve your toll free number from the SMS/800 database and use it with our virtual office service. Each search will return up to ten matching numbers. If no matches are found, you’re free to refine your search and try again. Our best advice for finding a toll free vanity number of your own is to start simple. It’s easy to get trapped into thinking you need to find a 5-, 6-, or 7-digit phrase with an available toll free prefix. The more flexible and creative you can be with your search, the better your chances of finding a vanity number that fits. Keep in mind that the 800 and 888 prefixes have been around the longest and typically have the least availability. Get a vanity number >
Keep Your Toll Free Number
At TollFreeRental.com®, we understand that your existing toll free number carries a lot of weight. It’s on your ads, your business cards, and your websites. You’ve spent considerable time and effort promoting this number and changing it now to move to a new provider would set you back on time and money and put you at risk of losing contact with your customers. Instead, TollFreeRental.com would like to transfer your toll free number to our virtual office service. We are a certified RespOrg, an organization responsible for handling toll free numbers, and have over a decade of experience in transferring numbers to our service. We will make certain that your current toll free provider adheres to FCC regulations to expedite the transfer. When transferring a toll free number to TollFreeRental.com, we start by issuing you a temporary number to help you get acquainted with your new virtual office service. At the same time, we send you a simple form to fill out and fax back that gives us permission to contact your current provider and have them release your toll free number to us.
Less reputable providers may drag their heels on losing you as a customer and can also reject your number transfer request for a handful of reasons. Even if your request is processed immediately, it may take as long as 7-10 business days for the number to be assigned to TollFreeRental.com.
To the right, we’ve listed a few steps that you can take to help expedite the number transfer process.
- Call your current provider and double-check the account information they have on file. Fill out our transfer form with the same information, as any mismatch may cause them to reject your request.
- Make sure your account with your existing provider is in good standing and that any outstanding balances are resolved. These problems can be cause for rejection.
- Don’t cancel your service with your current provider until after your toll free number has been successfully moved to TollFreeRental.com. Cancelling service waives your claim to your toll free number and can cause you to lose the number permanently.
The New 855 Prefix
The next set of toll free numbers slated for release is the 855 prefix. When this prefix is made available, roughly 7.7 million new toll free numbers will be open for reservation on a largely first-come, first-serve basis. Many competitive vanity number spellings that have not been available for years will be all-at-once in abundance to whomever can stake a claim on them. That said, the release of the 855 prefix has been postponed repeatedly since the year 2000. TollFreeRental.com® continually keeps an eye on any development in the expansion of toll free numbers and will be actively working to acquire 855 numbers at our customers’ request when they are inevitably released. Nobody but the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) can decide when the 855 prefix will be released. They constantly monitor how quickly toll free numbers are being used up versus how quickly old numbers are being released back into the pool of available numbers, and have used this information to repeatedly delay the release of this prefix. The FCC has also not allowed any provider to place any kind of reservation on these numbers at this time. Beware any provider of toll free numbers that tells you they can secure a specific 855 number for your business – especially if they want to charge you a fee to do so.
